About the Composer
A resident 3f Sacramento since 2018, the Japanese born Masatoshi Mitsumoto (b. 1937) came to the States in 1966 to study with Gregor Piatigorsky at USC. Since then, America has been his home and for over three decades he worked as a freelance cellist in Los Angeles-Hollywood and Las Vegas as well as teaching at Cal State Univ., Los Angeles, Whittier College and University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Mitsumoto is a graduate of the Tokyo University of Arts. He also studied at the Paris Conservatory with Paul Tortelier on a French Government Scholarship before coming to the States. His composition teachers were Leo Arnaud and Lukas Foss with whom he worked privately.
Mitsumoto served as the music director and conductor of the Laguna Beach Summer Music Festival, the Hakone Summer Music Festival in Japan, Concordia Orchestra Los Angeles, and the International Chamber Orchestra of Washington. He has made several CDs as a conductor for the Cambria, MMM, and Hollywood Symphony labels.
In addition to tonight’s program, his compositions include 2 cello concertos, a violin concertino, a harp concerto, a violin sonatina, clarinet sonatina, Divertimento for flute, viola and piano, Elegy for clarinet and piano, Songs of Experience for soprano and piano, Reverie for harp and Fantasy on Leo Arnaud’s Olympic Fanfare among others.

Our annual Scholarship concert is held at Sacramento State in February and features the current year’s outstanding young scholarship recipients.

Public Concerts
Members of The Sacramento Saturday Club perform concerts in the Sacramento area at the the Crocker Museum, Sacramento State School of Music, Music at Noon series, and other venues throughout the year.
